East at Large in Brittany

George and Donella are now living half-way up what passes as a mountain in the Finistere department of Brittany. Along with four chickens, two goats, Lupin the werecat and Milly the collie-cross, the couple are embedded in a hamlet with a population of just 11, which nestles at the bottom of a track leading up to hundreds of acres of moorland and granite crags.

With a lake, a small forest, and several acres of rich land,  cascades and rivers to play with at Little Paradise,  the Easts are also blessed with having Pandora as their very  helpful and  tolerant landlady. Pandy has obviously not read any of George's books, or she would never have agreed to allowing him on the premises.

From this idyllic base, George is wandering and wondering around Brittany as he gathers material for the first in a new series of books. French Impressions: George East’s Brittany will be a mixture of information on the region’s history, culture, traditions, food and drink ( especially the drink) and anecdotes in our hero’s unique style about the characters and situations he encounters.

The illustrated book will also contain recipes of unusual and often bizarre Breton dishes, and be, as the author says, more of a travelblog than a travelogue.Extracts and notes about George’s impressions of the special people and places he finds will appear on this page every month, and the book should be on sale in early 2008. Providing Donella can keep her husband out of the bars and in his office...

Book Reviews - Your chance to be a critic and help the cause!

You can help publicise the Mill of the Flea series and other books by George East by becoming a critic. Many book-selling sites on the web offer copies of the series, and some- like Waterstones, Amazon and Bol - offer readers the facility to record their thoughts in the form of a review. If you have a minute, please visit a suitable bookseller’s site and tell other readers what you think about a specific book and the Mill series as a whole. Reviews do help sales, and enable Donella to feed her wildlife flock and George to go on ‘research’ expeditions to local bars even more frequently! Thanks.

The Little Englanders will hate it. Another one to get up the noses of the boring old farts who look only for a corner of little England when they venture overseas. George does it with such affection that even the bad times feel tolerable. We did it the wrong way round and decided to live in France before we had read George's series in detail. I can only echo the laughs, the frustrations, the disasters and the triumphs of coming to terms with a culture that is geographically so near to but spiritually so far from the UK norm - which is precisely why we like it. George has captured it perfectly.

More magic moments from rural France The latest commentary on George and Donella's life in rural France and the way they interact with its people and customs. Sometimes sad, frequently hilarious but always well observed and wittily recorded. Having just finished reading the book I know that by tomorrow I will be forced to start reading it again!

A warm, and witty story, beautifully written. I spent the nearly the entire time reading this book falling about laughing and wishing I had this man's gift for story telling, and as a result, bought everything George has written. George gives life and depth to the characters he encounters in Normandy, and involves you in their triumphs and tragedies so that they become as real to you as your friends. His dealings with the wily fox of the Cotentin, alias Rene, are very well written and funny, and occasionally, just occasionally, will bring a lump to your throat.
